WHY, WHERE AND VARIABLES:

(1)The primary area of the United States in which significant tornadoes occur most often is in an L-shaped region from Iowa to Colorado to Texas with the highest threat in Oklahoma. In addition, this area has a consistent season each year - from April through mid-June, with the most tornadoes normally occurring in May. These two facts - the conjunction of high frequency of strong and violent tornadoes and the relative consistency of the season from year to year from north Texas up into western Iowa - provide a natural, objective way to define Tornado Alley. (2)Tornadoes form when two masses of different temperatures and humidity meet. If the lower layers of the atmosphere are unstable, a strong upward movement of warmer air is formed. This starts to spiral as it rises, and intensifies. Only a small percentage of these systems develop into the narrow, violent funnels of tornadoes.Tornadoes are formed when warm air comes from one direction and cold air comes from the other direction.

TECHNOLOGY:

(3)Two of the most important things that meteorologists can learn about storms through Doppler radar are the intensity and location of storms. Using this important information they are then equipped to send out warnings for specific areas. Doppler radar is what aids meteorologists in sending out tornado warnings. If the Storm Prediction Center issues a tornado watch it means that conditions are right for the development of severe storms with the ability to produce tornadoes. When the National Weather Service has issued a Doppler indicated tornado warning it means that Doppler radar has indicated a tornado over that area. A Doppler radar indicated tornado has not necessarily touched down on the ground, but is instead rotation that has been detected in the clouds. For this reason when the national weather service sends out a tornado warning it is very important to take the proper precautions because a tornado is very likely to set down at any moment if it hasn't already.

WHEN AND HOW:
a tornado warning is an alert issued by government weather services to warn that severe thunderstorms capable of spawning tornadoes may be imminent. It can be issued after either a tornado or funnel cloud has already been spotted, or if there are radar indications that a tornado may be possible. When this happens, the tornado Syrians may start going off in that area, letting people know that a tornado was seen or is forming nearby.
